Donald Trump
and Republicans had already signaled a willingness to negotiate with Democrats
on DACA when suddenly it became the Democrats’ hill to die on in the government
funding battle. Everything is being
gambled for the sake of less than a million people who can’t even legally
vote. If you think Democrats care so
much about the so-called “Dreamers,” then you are exceptionally naïve. We’re talking about people who would sell
their own mothers for a handful of votes, so clearly there’s a calculation
being made here, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure it out.
It could be
that Democrats are putting all their chips on DACA and risking the blame for a shutdown
because they believe so strongly in the rule that Republicans are always held
responsible for shutdowns, but I don’t think that’s it. This is a cunning group, and I think they’re
taking the shutdown gamble because it would take DACA out of the equation when
immigration negotiations resume. Without
that precious bargaining chip the Republican position will be significantly
weakened. On top of that Democrats will
get bonus points for bringing Republicans to their knees on the funding
fight. They have little to lose and much
to gain.
Trump and
Republicans would be giant fools to fall for this (it appears Lindsey Graham
already has but doesn’t that just prove my point?). If Republicans cave on DACA or anything else
in exchange for funding the government, they may as well throw their hands up
in the air and wear dresses the rest of the year.
